Sepilok Jazz Festival elevated to state-level event

SANDAKAN: The Sepilok Jazz Festival has been officially recognised as a state-level event and will be promoted under the Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
The announcement was made by Alexander Yee, President of Friends of Sea Turtles Education and Research (FOSTER) and organiser of the festival.
Yee shared that Datuk Josie Lai, Permanent Secretary of the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, confirmed the elevation of the conservation-themed festival. This year’s event held on Sept 5 and 6 at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, successfully drew 2,200 visitors, including international tourists, demonstrating its potential to become an iconic Sabah attraction.
Since its launch in 2022, it has centred on endangered sea turtle conservation, using music as a creative medium to raise awareness. All proceeds from ticket sales support FOSTER’s conservation activities on Libaran Island, which have led to the release of approximately 48,000 turtle hatchlings.
The festival also boosts the local economy by benefiting vendors, tourism operators, and small businesses. With a mix of international and local performers, Sepilok Jazz bridges cultures and promotes Sabah as a destination for both jazz and conservation.
Founded in 2013, FOSTER continues to work with communities, NGOs, and government agencies to protect marine life and support sustainable ecotourism. – James Leong
