Seri Mengasih’s children celebrate Malaysia Day

KOTA KINABALU: The special children of Seri Mengasih Centre (SMC) celebrated Malaysia Day to mark the nation’s formation on 16 September.
Usually, such celebrations are confined to the centre’s community as part of its mission to promote social inclusion and ensure no child is left out.
This year’s event was attended by Chef Dion Jee, Rice Chong and the team from Borneo Culinary Sabah and Sarawak (BCA), together with SMC Principal Juliana Jimis, teachers and students. The group brought goodies for the children.
The centre, established in 1981, has been operating for 44 years. It is the only one in Malaysia practising the Kololo Method, certified by Japan.
An MoU between SMC and Japan was signed 24 years ago, enabling teachers to undergo Kololo Method training in Japan. The method is widely used for autism therapy.
The centre will soon launch a hydroponics project in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), part of the students’ therapy and activities. The produce is expected to be supplied to restaurants and hotels.
Recently, SMC also completed a beautification project by planting flowers and herbs, a joint effort by teachers, management and parents to create a pleasant and motivating environment for the children.
SMC is a non-governmental organisation that depends entirely on public sponsorship, fundraising and charity. – Wu Vuide
