Hiew backs MPS initiative to revitalize old buildings in Sandakan town

SANDAKAN: Karamunting Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, has expressed his support for the Sandakan Municipal Council’s (MPS) initiative to revitalize old buildings in the town centre.
He stated that the areas from the town centre towards Bandar Ramai-Ramai, Bandar Leila, and Bandar Nam Tung were once bustling commercial hubs and the economic lifeline of Sandakan. However, over time, many buildings in these areas have become dilapidated, negatively impacting the town’s image.
“I welcome MPS’s efforts to clear overgrown vegetation and upgrade the facades of these buildings. This is a step that can transform the current situation and breathe new life into the surroundings.
“I am confident that with cooperation between the government and building owners, this initiative will not only beautify the town but also attract people and business opportunities back to these areas,” he made these remarks after attending a breaking-of-fast event with MPS President Walter Kenson on Saturday.
Hiew mentioned that under this improvement plan, MPS intends to collaborate with a government-appointed paint company to carry out comprehensive repainting of the buildings.
Walter also agreed that several old buildings in the area now appear worn out, with peeling paint and overgrown scrubs marring the town’s appearance. As such, MPS has begun cleanup efforts as an initial step.
In the near future, MPS will hold a meeting with representatives of premise owners to discuss forms of cooperation and encourage their participation in this beautification plan.
For premises rented out to tenants without proper documentation, MPS will also enhance monitoring and take strict action to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the surroundings are maintained.
“Since the new MPS President was appointed, he has frequently visited markets and areas around Bandar Ramai-Ramai and Leila, actively addressing public issues. This demonstrates his commitment to beautifying Sandakan.
“I believe that with community support, this plan can transform the town’s landscape and create a more comfortable and friendly environment for everyone,” he said. – James Leong
