SANDAKAN: Discussions to resolve a decades-long land dispute in Kampung Karamunting officially began on Wednesday, with the first stakeholder’s meeting proceeding smoothly and yielding an initial consensus to address the issue.
The dispute involves two separate land parcels: a 6-acre privately owned plot and approximately 15 acres under the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS).
According to Karamunting Assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, the private landowner has agreed to a land exchange with the government following negotiations during the meeting.
Held at the MPS conference room, the meeting was attended by representatives from Sandakan Land and Survey Department, Batu Sapi Parliament office, Native Court, the landowner, village leaders, and Hiew, who chaired the discussion.
Regarding the MPS-administered land, plans were discussed to formally gazette the area as a village, granting official recognition to Kampung Karamunting residents who have lived there for decades.
Hiew stated that the discussions were productive, with all parties aligned on finding the best resolution.
“Today marks the official start of these talks, and we are heartened to see everyone united in resolving this matter. We are confident subsequent meetings will yield positive outcomes,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
He added that guidelines on land boundaries, administrative procedures, and follow-up steps for future applications were also proposed during the meeting.
“We will continue working to ensure a peaceful and fair resolution for all parties involved,” Hiew emphasized.
Another meeting is expected soon to finalize the implementation of the agreement and secure an equitable outcome.
Hiew extended gratitude to all stakeholders, particularly village leaders, resident representatives, and landowners, for their cooperation in pursuing a collective resolution. – James Leong
