SANDAKAN: Libaran Member of Parliament, Datuk Suhaimi Haji Nasir, emphasized that the welfare of security personnel in Sabah’s East Coast should not be taken lightly and must instead be treated as a national priority.
His statement came in response to reports of inadequate and substandard facilities at several security posts in East Coast Sabah, as raised during the Sabah State Legislative Assembly session on April 15.
Among the issues reported were a lack of clean water supply, damaged toilets, and dilapidated living quarters unfit for occupation.
“We cannot expect them to keep sacrificing for the nation’s security without providing them with proper basic facilities,” he said in a media statement on Thursday.
Suhaimi described the situation as deeply concerning, as it involves the nation’s frontline personnel stationed in high-risk border areas.
He added that the welfare and facilities of security personnel are critical factors in determining their operational readiness and effectiveness in the field.
He further urged the Sabah State Government and the Federal Government to take immediate and serious action to upgrade security facilities and infrastructure in border areas, including within the Libaran parliamentary constituency.
“I am also committed to playing an active role in monitoring, reviewing, and ensuring that every development announcement or allocation is truly delivered and implemented transparently, fairly, and effectively on the ground,” he said.
He called on all parties to view security as a shared responsibility and to uphold the welfare of security personnel as a matter of national dignity. – James Leong
