SANDAKAN: The Friends of Sea Turtles Education and Research (FOSTER) leadership yesterday met with Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) President Walter Kenson to finalize preparations for the upcoming Sepilok Jazz 4th Edition, cementing the event’s position as Sabah’s premier conservation-through-music initiative.
Led by FOSTER President Alexander Yee, the delegation included Deputy President Johnny Lim, Secretary Aliza Alawi, and local singer-songwriter Cris Aban, one of this year’s featured performers. The meeting, held at MPS headquarters, focused on fostering collaboration for the upcoming festival.
Scheduled for Sept 5–6 September at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) Sepilok, Sepilok Jazz 4th Edition aims to blend music, conservation, and tourism while raising awareness for sea turtle protection. With an expected turnout of 4,000 attendees, the event stands as one of Sandakan’s largest community-driven environmental initiatives.
FOSTER is honoured to announce that Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment Sabah, will grace the event as Guest of Honour. Her participation underscores the government’s endorsement of eco-conscious cultural events.
This year’s festival will showcase international and local talents, including Jeremy Monteiro Trio featuring Tony Lakatos (Germany and Singapore), Flèche d’Or Swing Quartett (Germany), Seoul Fizz (Korea), Malaysian artists Sonny B and Wan G, Appy Tot, Cris Aban, Suave Swing, Trinity Jazz Band, Zizi Safira and Returning MC DJ Diddy
Yee emphasized that all proceeds will directly fund FOSTER’s conservation programs, including turtle nest monitoring, hatchery management, and coastal clean-ups. “Every ticket sold helps protect Sabah’s turtles,” he stated.
Walter Kenson expressed MPS’s full support, praising the event’s dual impact on tourism and environmental advocacy. “Initiatives like this benefit Sandakan’s economy and natural heritage,” he said.
