SANDAKAN: A three-unit workers’ quarters was completely destroyed in an early morning blaze at Jalan Seguntor here yesterday.
The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station reported receiving the emergency call through MERS 999 at 4.48 am and firefighters arrived at 5.13 am after traveling 17 kilometres to reach the location.
The blaze was brought under control within 45 minutes of the firemen’s arrival. Operations Commander PBK I Alan Ayuh confirmed that the wooden structure, was completely destroyed in the incident.
“All four occupants managed to evacuate safely before our arrival at the scene,” Ayuh stated, adding that the fire was fully extinguished by 6.49 am.
The operation involved 12 firefighters using an offensive strategy with water jets from their fire engines. No injuries were reported in the incident.
In a separate development, the search and rescue operation for Jusli Kiple, 48, who had been reported missing since August 18 in Kampung Bukit Besi, Beluran, was called off on Saturday afternoon.
The operation was called off at 1.00 pm after the missing man’s wife successfully contacted him on his mobile phone at 11.59 am that same day.
The four-day search effort involved personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and approximately 30 local villagers.
The man, who had gone to work at his farm located 500 metres from his residence on August 18, was confirmed to be safe and in good condition. – James Leong
