KUNAK: A collision between two three-ton trucks and a car claimed one life yesterday morning along the Kunak-Semporna Road, approximately 3 km from Pekan Kunak.
The Kunak Fire and Rescue Station personnel were despatched to the scene at 8.46 am and arrived within seven minutes. According to Operations Commander PBK II Ibrahim Ismail, the driver of the Proton Wira, a 44-year-old woman, was trapped in the vehicle following the impact.
Bystanders managed to extract three other passengers from the car before emergency services arrived. These individuals, all reported to be foreigners, were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Firefighters used specialized hydraulic tools to free the trapped driver, but she was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The operation, which involved five firemen, two policemen, and three medical personnel, concluded at 10.00 am.
Her remains were handed over to the police for further action.
In a separate incident in TAWAU, a fire that broke out in a shop house storage room was swiftly extinguished in the early hours of the same day, with no casualties reported.
The Tawau Fire and Rescue Station responded to a call at 2.48 am at Lorong Bintang Shophouse 5. Firefighters arrived at the location within five minutes and found a blaze under the stairs of a shop house block.
Operation Commander PBK I Suheizan Sahak reported that the fire, which damaged approximately five percent of the storage area, was brought under control by 3.04 am using water from a fire engine.
