Massive crocodile shot dead in Merotai amid village safety fears

TAWAU: A massive crocodile measuring over 17 feet long has been shot dead by authorities in Kampung Pangkalan Asli, Merotai near here on Thursday.
The incident was highlighted by Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, president of Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, who in his FB post on Friday, disclosed he was notified by village chief and party deputy division chief Mohammad Fakir.
“Fishermen reported frequent sightings of the crocodiles in their river area, which raised serious safety concerns. The community’s concerns were then escalated to the Sabah Wildlife Department,” Liew continued.
The department’s swift action is seen as a crucial pre-emptive measure to prevent any potential tragedy, given that a crocodile of such considerable size poses a fatal threat to humans.
According to Liew, this incident marks the fourth crocodile captured in the village within a mere 24-hour period, highlighting a significant presence of the reptiles in the area.
He expressed gratitude to wildlife officers and local volunteers for their swift action. – James Leong
