ESSCOM, Fisheries Dept to combat fish bombing activity in ESSZONE

LAHAD DATU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and the Sabah Fisheries Department will develop a long-term strategy to tackle fish bombing activities in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZONE).
ESSCOM Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos stated that fish bombing poses a threat to marine conservation, particularly to coral reefs which are vital for the country’s tourism sector.
Consequently, ESSCOM, in collaboration with the Sabah Fisheries Department, will hold discussions to formulate a comprehensive strategy. This includes launching integrated operations with related agencies in identified hotspot areas.
Victor disclosed this after the courtesy call by Sabah Fisheries Department director Datin Dr. Shuhadah Mustapha at the ESSCOM Headquarters here on Monday.
He emphasized that the responsibility to eradicate this activity does not lie solely with security and enforcement agencies. Maritime communities in the ESSZONE must also play a role by reporting these activities.
Victor added that apart from enforcement, ESSCOM and the Fisheries Department will conduct public engagement sessions and an awareness campaign titled “Say No to Fish Bombs.” The campaign aims to educate the public to avoid dealing with or to boycott sellers offering fish caught through bombing.
He also plans to expand the campaign using local radio to ensure the entire maritime community understands the negative impacts of this activity and the importance of preserving marine ecosystems for socio-economic and tourism benefits.
Meanwhile, Shuhadah expressed appreciation for ESSCOM’s cooperation. She stressed that this activity must be stopped to preserve marine ecosystems, which are crucial for the state’s tourism and fisheries sectors.
