Semporna Police seize syabu worth over RM22,000, arrest foreigner

SEMPORNA: Police arrested a foreigner and seized more than 200 grammes of syabu with an estimated street value of over RM22,000 during a raid in Kampung Sri Jaya here on Oct 21.
The operation, which took place at about 11.30 am, was carried out by a team from the Semporna District Police Headquarters (IPD) Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, assisted by personnel from the Pulau Bum Bum police station.
Acting OCPD DSP Jaafar Hakim, stated that the arrest was made after surveillance identified a man, aged in his 40s, acting suspiciously, who was suspected of being involved in drug distribution activities in the district.
“A body search on the suspect led to the discovery of a black sling bag. Inside, we found a black plastic package containing four smaller transparent plastic packets filled with a crystalline substance, believed to be syabu,” Jaafar said.
The gross weight of the confiscated drugs was approximately 200.54 grammes, valued at an estimated RM22,059.40.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory penalty of death or life imprisonment upon conviction.
Jaafar reiterated the district police’s commitment to combating the drug menace and called for public cooperation.
“The police would like to stress that distributing, possessing, or misusing drugs is a serious crime under the law. We welcome cooperation and information from the public to jointly combat this activity,” he stated. – James Leong
