TONGOD: The stalled construction of the Tongod Sports Complex is scheduled to resume early next year, following the termination of the previous contractor’s contract in July.
According to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) candidate for Kuamut state seat and PGRS vice president Datuk Masiung Banah, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is currently finalizing the documentation to appoint a new contractor to complete the project.
“The previous contractor, appointed by the former government, had their contract terminated after failing to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe,” Masiung explained.
“We issued several warnings and granted a four-time extension, but they failed to make physical progress, leading KBS to issue the termination directive.”
Masiung, who made these remarks after launching the GRS campaign machinery in the Tongod Polling District (PDM) on Wednesday, addressed critics who have used the stalled project for political campaigning. He clarified that the opposition should note the contractor in question was appointed during their own administration.
“I do not question whose crony the contractor is, but I insist that they must be capable of completing the work on schedule,” he stated.
He expressed disappointment with the physical progress of the RM7 million project since last year, noting that the opposition has wrongly blamed him for delays, despite the project having been fully handed over to a contractor they appointed.
“But do not worry, we already have a solution,” Masiung assured.
“KBS will appoint a new contractor as early as next year to complete the remaining work. I am confident the project will be completed within two years. From what I see, the new contractor primarily needs to construct the track and install the electricity and water connections.” – James Leong
