TAWAU: A foreigner acting as a drug mule or ‘runner’ was arrested with the seizure of over one kilogramme of syabu worth RM35,000 last Thursday.
In a special operation, a police team from the District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJND) arrested the 19-year-old suspect at around 10.15 pm.
OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin, stated that the suspect was apprehended in front of a cold storage facility on Jalan Chong Thien Vun after police stopped a suspicious four-wheel-drive vehicle.
“The inspection led to the discovery of one plastic packet containing a crystalline substance believed to be syabu, weighing 1,009.47 grammes.
“Preliminary investigations found that the suspect acted as a ‘runner,’ receiving a payment of tens of millions of Rupiah to deliver this drug supply to a neighbouring country,” he said in a statement.
In the same operation, police also seized a four-wheel-drive vehicle, a mobile phone, vehicle keys, and several pieces of jewellery believed to be linked to drug distribution activities.
According to Jasmin, the suspect is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
“Intelligence efforts are ongoing to identify the drug distribution network involved in this district,” he explained.
Jasmin also urged the public to stay away from drugs and to cooperate with the police by providing any information related to drug distribution activities in their areas. – James Leong
