TAWAU: The district police here arrested three suspects in three separate cases within less than 48 hours, involving criminal intimidation and document fraud.
On Jan 31, a foreigner in his 30s was arrested in connection with a case of threatening to distribute intimate videos and photos of a woman in her 20s.
The victim, who was the suspect’s former acquaintance, reported being threatened via several phone numbers and coerced into handing over money to prevent her intimate materials from being leaked, OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin said.
The suspect, who had been harassing the victim, was arrested at around 5.45 pm in Kampung Merotai Besar. Police confiscated a knife and two mobile phones. The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, he added.
Jasmin said on Feb 1, a foreign woman, aged about 80 years old, was arrested on suspicion of using another individual’s identification document.
The incident came to light when a public hospital officer brought the woman to the National Registration Department for a biometric check of her MyKad, which was found to belong to someone else. Police seized one MyKad and are investigating the case under Section 25(1)(e) of the Registration Regulations 1990 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, Jasmin said.
In a separate incident on the same day, a teenage boy in Kampung Haji Sundu Batu 2, Jalan Apas, filed a police report after receiving threatening messages via WhatsApp from an acquaintance, he continued.
Following the report, police arrested a foreigner, about 18 years old, in the compound of the Tawau District Police Headquarters. This case is also being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Jasmin said.
Jasmin emphasised that the district police take all forms of threats, extortion, and document fraud seriously and will not compromise with any party violating the law. – James Leong
