SANDAKAN: The concrete structure supporting a water pipeline in Taman Mutiara, Batu 3½ Jalan Utara here, is at risk of collapsing due to severe soil erosion, posing a safety threat to residents and road users.
Sandakan Member of Parliament, Vivian Wong Shir Yee, stressed that the issue must be addressed urgently and cannot be allowed to persist.
“If left unresolved, it could destabilize the water supply system and endanger public safety,” she said in a statement on Wednesday.
In response, a complaint team from the Sandakan Parliamentary Office has conducted a site inspection to prepare a detailed report. Vivian also confirmed that her office has contacted the Water Department, the Public Works Department (JKR), and the slope technical unit to conduct an immediate joint assessment.
“The goal is to identify the cause of the soil erosion and implement appropriate repair and reinforcement measures for a comprehensive solution,” she added.
She emphasized that infrastructure safety is a matter of public interest.
“Repair work must be carried out with attention to construction quality and long-term safety to prevent recurrence,” Vivian stressed.
The Sandakan Parliamentary Office will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with relevant departments until the issue is fully resolved. – James Leong
