SEMPORNA: Police in eastern Sabah arrested three men in a series of separate operations in Semporna and Tawau on Feb 19 and 20, involving cases of drug possession, domestic violence, and criminal intimidation.
In an early morning operation in Semporna, a team of policemen from the District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division detained an Indonesian man and seized 5.05 grams of drugs believed to be syabu.
Semporna OCPD Superintendent Tan Hiap Wah, stated that the raid on an unnumbered house in Kampung Rau-Rau, Lihak-Lihak at 1.30 am on Feb 19 was conducted based on intelligence information.
“During the raid, police discovered a man acting suspiciously in the living room. A further inspection of the suspect’s bag led to the discovery of 5.05 grams of syabu,” he said.
The 56-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested and taken to the Semporna District Police Headquarters. A check of past records revealed that the suspect has no prior criminal history.
The case is being investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a minimum jail term of two years and a minimum of three strokes of the cane if found guilty.
Meanwhile, in Tawau, a 28-year-old local man was arrested by police on Feb 20 after his wife filed a report alleging that she was assaulted at their home in Kampung Titingan.
Tawau OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin, said the incident is believed to have stemmed from the suspect’s dissatisfaction regarding childcare arrangements. Acting on the report, a team from the Tawau District Criminal Investigation Division managed to track down and arrest the suspect.
The suspect, who is now being remanded for further investigation, will be investigated under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Penal Code, as well as Section 18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994.
In a separate case in Tawau, a 42-year-old foreigner was arrested on Feb 20 on suspicion of making criminal threats against a local man via the WhatsApp application.
According to ACP Jasmin Hussin, the victim received a voice note containing threats and intimidation from the suspect while at Tawau Hospital, believed to be due to the victim’s refusal to give the suspect money.
“A team of policemen from the District Criminal Investigation Division arrested the suspect at an unnumbered house in Kampung Baru, Mile 2 Jalan Apas,” he said. The suspect, who works as a labourer, was taken to the police station for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering the country without a valid pass. – James Leong
