TENOM: Efforts to ease the burden of residents affected by floods in the Melalap constituency are being intensified by Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.
He said various forms of immediate assistance are being mobilised to ensure flood victims receive essential needs promptly, including the distribution of food supplies, clean water, hygiene kits and daily necessities.
He said 12 temporary relief centres have been opened across Melalap, accommodating about 1,500 affected residents.
He added that all relief centres are being closely managed to ensure the safety and comfort of evacuees throughout their stay.
Jamawi said Tenom has experienced floods three times since the beginning of this year, placing additional pressure on residents and authorities in managing the emergency situation.
He stressed that close cooperation between the Tenom District Office, the Civil Defence Force, the Fire and Rescue Department and the Social Welfare Department has been a key factor in ensuring the smooth delivery of aid operations.
He said all involved agencies are working in an integrated manner to expedite assistance to victims.
Beyond emergency aid, he said the assemblyman’s office and the ministry are also assessing the need for follow-up assistance, including house-cleaning efforts, assessment of property damage and the provision of recovery aid.
These measures, he said, aim to help residents resume normal life as quickly as possible once floodwaters recede.
He emphasised the importance of preventive measures, advising residents to monitor weather conditions closely and comply with authorities’ instructions to ensure the safety of themselves and their families.
He also praised the local community for assisting flood victims by voluntarily providing food, clothing and other necessities.
He said such community support helps ease the burden on affected residents while strengthening solidarity in facing disasters.
Jamawi affirmed that the State Government remains committed to continuously monitoring the flood situation in affected areas.
“The State Government will ensure all assistance and support are provided continuously until conditions fully recover,” he said.
