50-year-old man dies after 4WD vehicle plunges into drain

SANDAKAN: A man was killed after the four-wheel-drive vehicle (4WD) he was driving skidded off the road and plunged into a drain in front of the Federal Building, Mile 7 Jalan Labuk yesterday.
Officer-in-charge of Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station Jimmy Lagung said seven personnel were despatched to the scene, located nearly seven kilometres from the station, after receiving an emergency call at 12.56 pm
Upon arrival at 1.05 pm, operation commander, Senior Fire Officer I Haris Mustapha, reported that a 4WD had skidded off the road and ended up in a drain. The accident resulted in the driver, identified as Chock Vui Heong, 50, being trapped inside the vehicle, Jimmy said.
Rescue personnel used specialised hydraulic equipment to extract the trapped victim. The extraction operation was completed by 1.10 pm. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from the Ministry of Health.
The victim’s body was later sent to the hospital for further action. The operation concluded at 1.58 pm after firemen conducted a thorough inspection of the site to ensure no further hazards remained. – James Leong
