Stronger preventive measures needed to protect women

KOTA KINABALU: Stronger preventive measures are needed to curb sexual assaults against women, said Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Julita Majungki.
She called for greater engagement with families, communities and religious institutions to address the social ill.
She was responding to a recent case in Lahad Datu involving a father who raped his two daughters, after attending the ministry’s Hari Raya celebration at Wisma Wanita.
The 54-year-old man was sentenced to a total of 165 years’ imprisonment and 110 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to 11 charges.
“This is very sad and should not happen. While offenders must face the courts, prevention is equally important,” she said.
Julita also urged victims of abuse to come forward, report to the authorities and seek help from the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department (Jhewa), which provides shelter and support.
She added that the Women’s Protection Shelter (Rupawan) provides temporary shelter, protection and rehabilitation support for women in crisis.
Rupawan can be contacted via WhatsApp at 011-27918840.
The Women’s Legal Aid Centre (PBGW) also offers legal advice and assistance in cases such as domestic violence, divorce and child custody, ensuring access to justice and protection under the law.
The centre can be reached via WhatsApp at 010-5831891.
She said the ministry also conducts advocacy programmes on domestic violence prevention and legal literacy to raise awareness and encourage early intervention through Jhewa.
“These efforts are complemented by ongoing awareness programmes and community engagement initiatives aimed at promoting positive family values.
“My ministry will continue working closely with community leaders and relevant institutions to enhance outreach, particularly in guiding parents and families to create a safe environment for children,” she said.
