To strengthen Sabah’s development through strategic projects in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: The Madani Government remains committed to ensuring that Sabah’s development agenda continues to be strengthened comprehensively, inclusively, and with high impact – to improve the people’s well-being and reinforce basic infrastructure in Sabah.
Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak), said that the approval of RM2.17 billion under the 13th Malaysia Plan for Sandakan demonstrates the Federal Government’s serious commitment to bridging development gaps and delivering tangible benefits to Sabahans.
“This is not just about allocation figures; it is about real change – better roads, clean water, proper sanitation, and enhanced security for the people of Sandakan. The Madani Government listens and acts,” he said.
For the Sandakan area, a total of 39 development projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) have been identified, with an overall value of RM2.17 billion, spanning various strategic sectors including road infrastructure, water supply, education, security, and environmental conservation. For 2026 alone, RM213.32 million has been allocated to fund the involved projects.
Of these projects, 26 are currently in the implementation phase, 12 have entered the post-implementation phase, and one project has been fully completed. These positive developments reflect an encouraging level of progress as well as strong coordination among ministries, implementing agencies, and the State Government.
Among the high-impact projects currently being implemented are the construction of the Jalan Semawang to Tanjung Kuala Gum-Gum road – which will enhance connectivity and public mobility; the Sandakan Sewage Treatment Plant to strengthen urban sanitation systems; the construction of the Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT) and Mawilla 2 Jetty to bolster security and defence capabilities; and the upgrading of the Sandakan water supply system to ensure a more stable and sustainable water supply for residents.
Overall, the majority of projects are on track with their scheduled implementation timelines. This demonstrates that the Madani Government is not merely paying attention to Sabah’s development demands, but continues to translate them into concrete action, implementation, and allocations.
The government will continue to ensure that every planned project is carried out effectively, transparently, and brings direct benefits to the people, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani which emphasises balanced development, people’s well-being, and the strengthening of regional economies.

‘This is not just about allocation figures; it is about real change – better roads, clean water, proper sanitation, and enhanced security for the people of Sandakan. The Madani Government listens and acts’ – Mustapha
