Sepilok Jazz 2026 returns with conservation focus and full MPS backing

SANDAKAN: The Sepilok Jazz 5th Edition 2026 has secured full backing from Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), reinforcing the council’s commitment to establishing Sandakan as a premier destination for tourism, arts, and environmental awareness.
MPS president Datuk Walter Kenson reaffirmed the council’s strong endorsement during a coordination meeting, stating that Sepilok Jazz has become one of Sabah’s signature events that showcases the region’s biodiversity and cultural vibrancy to international visitors.
“As long as programmes like Sepilok Jazz continue to promote Sandakan positively and contribute to tourism and community engagement, MPS will provide its full support,” said Walter.
Organised by Friends of Sea Turtles Education and Research (FOSTER) in collaboration with the Sabah Tourism Board and MPS, the festival combines world-class jazz performances with conservation initiatives, this year supporting sea turtle conservation at Walai Penyu Conservation Park on Libaran Island.
Under the theme “Conservation Through Music,” the event will feature 18 bands and over 100 musicians across three stages, including international artistes Shila Amzah, Jeremy Monteiro, Mezzotono (Italy), and Malaysian performers Janet Lee, Tay Cher Siang, Roger Wang, and Yap Ling.
FOSTER president Alexander Yee expressed excitement about bringing talented musicians to Sandakan, creating opportunities for cultural exchange while advancing the festival’s mission of placing Sandakan on the international jazz map.
The festival’s youth development programmes have seen remarkable growth, with Bakat Sepilok Jazz attracting 132 participants in 2026, up from 105 in 2025, while the Big Band Music Symposium and Young Jazz Musicians Exchange Programme offer workshops and collaboration opportunities for local musicians.
The event will take place at the Rainforest Discovery Centre on 4-5 September 2026, from 6pm to 10pm, with approximately 5,000 visitors expected. Early Bird tickets (until 30 June) are priced at RM80 for one-day and RM120 for two-day passes, with VIP experiences available at RM640.
The public is invited to join this unique celebration of music, nature, and conservation that contributes to meaningful environmental impact for future generations while strengthening Sandakan’s reputation as a cultural destination. – James Leong
