Over 200 participate in HMM Chess Rapid Championship 2026

SANDAKAN: The HMM Chess Rapid Championship 2026 attracted more than 200 participants from across Sabah, as well as competitors from other states.
The championship held on July 4 and 5, was officially opened by Sungai Manila State Assemblyman, Datuk Haji Hazem Mubarak Tun Musa, who highlighted chess as a unique sport that develops mental strength, critical thinking, and strategic decision-making.
Speaking to the media after the opening ceremony, Hazem said that unlike many sports that primarily rely on physical strength, chess challenges players to think analytically and plan their strategies with precision.
“Chess is a sport that strengthens the mind and encourages participants to develop strategic thinking. This is what makes the game both unique and intellectually challenging,” he said.
He also described the turnout of more than 200 participants as an encouraging sign for the continued growth of chess in Sabah.
According to Hazem, the championship featured not only players from Sandakan and other districts in Sabah but also participants from other states and abroad. Among the highlights was the participation of a four-year-old international player, reflecting the sport’s growing appeal among young talents.
“I hope championships like this will continue to be organised in the future,” he added.
Also present at the event were Sandakan Municipal Council President Datuk Walter Kenson, and Sawit Kinabalu Manager of Corporate Communications Division Noni Dimsin. – James Leong
