KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has emphasized that proficiency in both Mandarin and English is a strategic advantage for Sarawakians, as the region solidifies its position in the global economy and expands trade with China and other regional markets.
He stated that the Sarawak Government’s recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) reflects its commitment to equipping the people with the necessary language skills and knowledge to remain competitive in an increasingly interconnected and export-oriented economy.
“Bahasa Melayu remains our national identity, but in today’s global economy, English and Mandarin are equally important. If we want to do business with China and the region, we must have the ability to communicate effectively,” said Abang Johari.
He made these remarks during his speech on Saturday at the 20th Global Nanyang University Alumni Reunion. The event brought together over 1,200 alumni from around the world, making it the largest gathering in the history of the event.
Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak’s economy is highly reliant on exports, and the region is continuously expanding its trade in energy, petrochemicals, and other high-value-added products into international markets, particularly within Asia.
He noted that multilingualism enables Sarawakians to negotiate directly with international business partners, deepen commercial ties, and seize emerging opportunities in regional and global markets.
He added that the Sarawak Government is making substantial long-term investments in education to nurture a highly-skilled workforce. This includes providing free higher education at state-owned universities for eligible Sarawakian students, offering courses in strategic fields, particularly science and technology.
Abang Johari emphasized that high-quality education, combined with multilingual proficiency and technological expertise, is crucial for developing the next generation of Sarawakian youths. This, he said, will drive Sarawak’s economic transformation and further elevate its global competitiveness.
Also present at the dinner were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, Nanyang University Alumni chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King and organising chairperson David Wong Siew Chow.
