TAWAU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has welcomed the acquisition of two new quay cranes for Tawau Port, describing the RM70 million investment as a strategic step to strengthen Sabah’s port infrastructure and support long-term economic growth.
He said the investment reflects the State Government’s commitment, through Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB), to modernise key infrastructure and improve the efficiency and competitiveness of Sabah’s ports, particularly on the East Coast.
“Once operational, the cranes will boost productivity, improve operational reliability and increase cargo-handling efficiency at Tawau Port.
“They will enable faster vessel turnaround, reduce waiting time and strengthen the port’s capacity to handle larger vessels and growing cargo volumes,” he said at the ceremony marking the acquisition of the cranes at Tawau Port here.
Hajiji said an efficient and reliable port system is vital to support key sectors, especially export-oriented industries that contribute significantly to the state’s economy.
He said the upgrade would further strengthen Tawau Port’s role as the main maritime gateway on Sabah’s East Coast while improving connectivity with domestic and regional markets.
Hajiji also commended SPSB, Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and all parties involved for their commitment to strengthening Sabah’s maritime infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Suria Capital Holdings chairman Datuk Seri Abd Rahman Dahlan said the investment reflects the group’s long-term commitment to strategic infrastructure development.
“Tawau Port plays an important role in supporting trade, industry and regional connectivity on Sabah’s East Coast.
“This RM70 million investment will equip the port to meet future trade demand and support the economic growth of Tawau and the surrounding region,” he said.
Suria Capital and SPSB group managing director Datuk Ahmad Rizal Dahli said the acquisition is part of SPSB’s ongoing efforts to modernise Tawau Port.
“These new cranes mark another milestone in the port’s development. Once operational, they will improve cargo-handling efficiency and reliability, enhance services for port users and support Sabah’s growing trade and logistics needs,” he said.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister III and Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman and Sabah Ports Authority chairman Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
