TAWAU: The district police here arrested two male foreigners in separate cases involving the theft of money from the mosque donation box and alleged criminal intimidation over a car that was allegedly pawned as loan collateral.
OCPD ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the first suspect, aged in his 30s, was arrested at about 10.45 am on Sept 19 by the police in front of a workshop in Mile 8, Kalabakan.
The arrest followed a police report lodged at about 9.00 am last Thursday by plantation enforcement personnel after money was stolen from a mosque donation box at a plantation in Kalabakan. The incident was noticed by a plantation supervisor who is also a member of the mosque committee. About RM350 was reported missing after an individual is believed to have entered the unlocked mosque. The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code.
In the second case, Rosdi said a 35-year-old man was arrested by a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division (CID) together with officers from Bombalai Police Station, on the afternoon of Sept 18.
Acting on information at about 2.30 pm, the raiding team went to a petrol station in Bombalai and arrested the man. During initial questioning, the suspect admitted involvement in a case reported in the Kinabatangan district, which is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
Police also seized a Perodua Bezza and its key, believed to be linked to the case. Preliminary investigations found that the car belonged to the victim and had earlier been lent to the victim’s younger sibling, who was the suspect’s wife. After the sibling’s death, the suspect is believed to have taken the car to Tawau without the victim’s consent.
The victim was also told that the suspect had allegedly pawned the car’s registration card to another party in Tawau as collateral for a loan. The victim subsequently received a call from an unknown person demanding RM2,500 because the car registration card in the victim’s name had been used as collateral. The suspect had also allegedly threatened to burn the victim’s car if the victim did not lend him money.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. – James Leong
