Sabah shifts focus to green spaces and economic progress – Ariffin

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is redefining state progress by balancing socio-economic development with the protection of its natural ecosystems for future generations, said State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Ariffin Arif.
“The state’s development should not be measured solely by the expansion of infrastructure,” he said, noting that true progress must be evaluated through the ability to create a quality environment, preserve natural heritage, and elevate the overall quality of life.
Speaking at the Sabah Landscape Architecture Awards (SLAA) 2026, Ariffin said the initiative directly supports the State Government’s Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development blueprint under Thrust 5 of the Sabah State Landscape Policy, which focuses on fostering a deeper public appreciation for green spaces.
He underlined the importance of adopting Nature-based Solutions (NBS) in urban development to mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce disaster risks, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Ariffin stressed that building sustainable and resilient landscapes cannot be carried out by the government alone, but requires active cross-sector collaboration.
“Quality landscapes do not happen by chance—they are the result of a clear vision of the future, comprehensive planning, and a firm commitment to responsible development,” he said.
He urged local authorities (PBTs), government agencies, private developers, and local communities to systematically integrate sustainable landscape practices into every stage of development planning and execution across Sabah.
Organized in collaboration with the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), SLAA 2026 serves as a key platform to recognize design excellence, drive green innovation, and set benchmark standards for urban liveability in the state.
Ariffin also commended and congratulated all award recipients and participants for their commitment, hard work, and outstanding contributions toward advancing sustainable landscape development in Sabah.
The ceremony was attended by ILAM President LAr. Prof. Dr. Nor Atiah Ismail and including Deputy Minister II of KKTP, Datuk Dr Maijol Mahap along with senior officials, local councils, and industry leaders.
