SANDAKAN: The Psychiatry and Mental Health Department of Hospital Duchess of Kent (HDOK) here recently held its World Mental Health Day 2026 celebration at the hospital’s Dewan Selingan, with a focus on the mental wellbeing of hospital staff.
The event was officiated by HDOK Director Dr Fahmie Othman. This year’s celebration carried the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” emphasising the importance of listening to and understanding the experiences of individuals facing mental health issues, while reducing stigma, particularly in the workplace.
A range of activities was held throughout the programme to raise awareness and encourage mental health care practices among hospital staff. These included a practical session on relaxation and stress management techniques to help participants manage stress and improve their personal wellbeing.
The programme also featured an AI-based video presentation titled “Voices of Lived Experiences,” highlighting the real experiences of clients and patients while fully protecting their identities and privacy.
In addition, an interactive “Say This, Not That” session using the Kahoot! platform was held to encourage more empathetic, positive and supportive language when communicating about mental health.
A “Let’s Talk” forum provided an open space for discussion on staff mental wellbeing, workplace challenges and the management’s role in creating a healthier, safer and more supportive work environment.
The celebration was further enlivened by an Occupational Therapy and MENTARI Elopura exhibition, which introduced the services and rehabilitation programmes available to support individuals on their mental health recovery journey.
The programme is expected to strengthen HDOK staff awareness of the importance of mental health, encourage more empathetic communication and help build an inclusive, mutually supportive work culture.
By focusing on individuals’ real experiences, the celebration also carried the message that every voice deserves to be heard and understood in order to create positive change in mental health care. – James Leong
