Media is PDRM’s strategic partner in maintaining peace – Jauteh

KOTA KINABALU: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) acknowledges the important role of the media in delivering accurate, fast and comprehensive information to the public.
It is also very important in helping the PDRM maintain national peace and security.
Sabah Police Commissioner, Datuk Jauteh Dikun said that without media support and widespread dissemination of information, the various efforts carried out by the police may have difficulty reaching their targets.
He said the situation was different compared to the era before the rapid development of the media when society relied heavily on the delivery of information orally or by word of mouth.
“Traditional communication methods take a long time to convey information from one party to another, thus opening up room for misunderstandings and different perceptions.
“Hostility arises when the party providing the explanation is based on their own perception or way of presenting it. So of course the things presented are inaccurate or incorrect,” he said.
He said this when speaking at an appreciation ceremony with media practitioners at the Sabah Police Contingent (IPK) Headquarters, here yesterday.
Jauteh said that the development of media and widespread broadcasting has changed the landscape of community communication as information can be conveyed more quickly, accurately and uniformly.
He said that access to the same information allows the community to understand developments more comprehensively without being too tied to perceptions based on a particular race, ethnicity or region.
“In the context of the current PDRM assignment, the media is a very important element, to convey the true facts to the public.
“The results of the media’s work can bring down a country, can develop a country, can secure a country. That is why the role of the media in the PDRM’s assignment is extremely important,” he said. – Fardy Bungga
