RANAU: A total of 573 residents in Kundasang received free eye screenings and eyeglasses through a two-day community programme organized by the Sabah Golf Association (SGA) in collaboration with SPECTRA, led by Dato’ Seri David Sew.
The initiative, held at two locations from May 2 to 3, was aimed to address vision-related issues among locals, particularly students and rural communities.
Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, praised the initiative as a “meaningful effort to improve the quality of life for residents, especially those with vision impairments.”
During his visit to SMK Bundu Tuhan on May 2, he emphasized the programme’s alignment with community-driven philanthropy.
“Such programmes directly uplift local communities through charitable acts. This is a true example of giving back to society,” he stated.
Joachim, who is also the Minister of Local Government and Housing and Kundasang Assemblyman, extended gratitude to SGA, sponsors, and SMK Bundu Tuhan’s principal, Prince Abd Halim Chan, for their support.
He urged more NGOs and private entities to initiate similar rural outreach efforts.
“We welcome greater participation from organizations to empower underserved communities,” Joachim added.
SGA Secretary and Project Director, Ian Yong, highlighted the programme’s role in supporting vulnerable groups, particularly students.
“Our partnership with SPECTRA enabled comprehensive eye screenings and distribution of free eyeglasses to eligible recipients. We hope this initiative enhances their vision, improving both learning and daily living,” he said.
The programme was sponsored by Sinaland Sdn Bhd and Primaland Sdn Bhd, underscoring private sector involvement in public welfare.
123 students from SMK Bundu Tuhan were diagnosed with vision issues and provided free eyeglasses on the first day.
300 residents received similar aid on the second day at Kundasang Open Stage, bringing the total beneficiaries to 423 individuals. – James Leong
