SANDAKAN: Ex-Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung and his secretary, Liau Fui Fui, have officially joined the Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) in a significant political development.
The two leaders are slated to contest under the KDM banner in the upcoming 17th Sabah General Election, with Poon set to defend his former seat of Tanjong Papat and Liau contesting in Elopura.
The announcement was made at the launch of KDM’s East Coast Zone in Sandakan on Sunday, an event that drew more than 2,000 members from 105 party branches.
Explaining his move, Poon—the former Sabah DAP chairman—stated that he joined a local party to better prioritise the welfare of Sabahans. Echoing this sentiment, Liau highlighted her eight years of political experience and reiterated her commitment to grassroots development.
KDM Deputy President Datuk Wetrom Bahanda welcomed the new members, expressing strong confidence in their capabilities. He emphasized the party’s inclusive nature, stating, “KDM is a party for all and not limited to any one community.”
The party has announced plans to contest 38 seats statewide, with a full list of candidates to be revealed before Nov 13 in Kota Kinabalu. KDM acting president Priscella Peter affirmed the party’s strategic focus on youth and community engagement, expressing confidence that Poon and Liau would run effective campaigns in their respective constituencies. – James Leong
