TAWAU: A road accident involving three vehicles occurred on Jalan Timur, in front of Taman Eastern, here on Wednesday.
OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin, said the district police received a report on the case at 12.50 pm.
Investigations revealed that the accident happened around 12.15 pm involving a 10‑tonne trailer lorry, a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, a 37‑year‑old local man, was travelling from Taman Dah Hua towards Sin On Market. While riding along a straight downhill section of the road, he attempted to overtake a MPV driven by a 65‑year‑old man who was heading from Megah Jaya towards SMK Tawau.
As the motorcyclist was overtaking, he noticed a trailer lorry carrying fibre material approaching from the opposite direction. He then tried to return to his lane, but collided with the rear of the MPV. He was thrown into the opposite lane and subsequently struck the lorry’s front right tyre.
As a result of the accident, the motorcyclist sustained severe injuries to his right leg, up to the knee. The lorry driver, also aged 37, and the MPV driver, aged 65, escaped unharmed.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other road users.
Meanwhile, Jasmin advised all road users to always comply with traffic rules and not take risks when overtaking other vehicles.
“Haste and overtaking in hazardous locations can lead to serious accidents and loss of life,” he stressed. – James Leong
