SANDAKAN: Elopura State Assemblyman, Calvin Chong, held a meeting with residents of Taman Grandview on Thursday to discuss concerns regarding the location of a telecommunication tower, which is reportedly positioned too close to the residential area.
Residents voiced their worries over safety, health, and quality of life, as well as the potential negative impact on property values in the neighbourhood.
The session was also attended by officers from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), a representative from the Tanjong Papat assemblyman’s office, and homeowners living near the tower site.
MCMC clarified that its authority is limited to technical aspects and compliance with communication standards. MCMC emphasised that it has no power to approve or determine the location of telecom towers. Such approvals fall under the jurisdiction of the local authorities — in this case, the Sandakan Municipal Council — based on town planning guidelines, land use, and local development needs.
Chong stated that while he supports the strengthening of telecommunication infrastructure for stable and quality network access, the implementation must balance developmental needs with the safety and well-being of residents. He urged the Sandakan Municipal Council and the developer involved to review the tower’s location carefully, including the possibility of relocation or adjustments to the installation plan in line with safety guidelines and minimum distance requirements from residential areas.
Chong assured residents that he would continue to act as an intermediary between the community and the relevant agencies to ensure the issue is resolved fairly, transparently, and comprehensively. – James Leong
