SANDAKAN: LDP Vice President Chong Thien Ming has thrown his full support behind the recent joint enforcement operation targeting illegal electricity and water connections in Sandakan, describing the move as long overdue.
Chong highlighted that Sabah Electricity and the State Water Department are losing millions of Ringgit annually due to these illicit activities, and urged authorities to conduct similar operations on a monthly basis to effectively curb the problem.
He identified illegal squatter settlements as major contributors to these losses, and called for intensified demolition efforts, noting that such areas are often linked to criminal activities including drug trafficking and substance abuse involving syabu and ecstasy.
Citing available statistics, Chong warned that Sandakan already harbours a high number of undocumented immigrants, and cautioned that without decisive action, the town risks being overwhelmed by illegal settlers and future generations born without proper documentation.
While commending the Sandakan Municipal Council for ongoing cleanliness initiatives and improved street lighting, Chong expressed concern over the town’s weakening economic indicators, with factories closing and investors departing from what was once one of Sabah’s strongest economic contributors.
He called on the Sabah Government to prioritise Sandakan’s economic recovery, expressing confidence that the town can regain its former strength through collaboration between authorities, local communities, businesses, and non-governmental organisations.
Chong also voiced confidence in MPS President Datuk Walter Kenson’s leadership, noting that the council has laid a solid foundation, and urged all enforcement agencies to continue tackling illegal activities that drain state finances and undermine the well-being of Sabahans. – James Leong
