Sandakan Sessions Court sentences teenager to 14 years for robbery

SANDAKAN: The Sessions Court here sentenced a teenager to 14 years’ imprisonment and eight strokes of the cane on Thursday for robbing and injuring a 61-year-old elderly woman in Taman Megah last March.
The accused, Alimanja Aroiski, 19, was also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation upon completion of his sentence.
However, during proceedings for the rape charge in the same court on Friday, Judge Roslinda Razali declined to accept the accused’s guilty plea until a complete medical report had been received, and fixed July 27 as the next case mention date.
For the robbery and injury offence, the court heard that the accused had broken into the victim’s home through a window at approximately 1.30 am on March 21. Once inside, he threatened her with an object believed to be a pair of scissors and demanded money and her jewellery. He then acted violently—choking the victim and punching her in the face, causing injuries—before tying her hands to incapacitate her from resisting.
Under those circumstances, the accused robbed her of a gold bracelet and two mobile phones. As a result of the incident, the victim also sustained physical injuries and suffered trauma.
Meanwhile, for the rape charge, Alimanja is accused of committing an offence under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code at the same time and location of the incident.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Jasmin Walter handled both prosecutions, while Alimanja was unrepresented by counsel. – James Leong
