MACC Sandakan detains CDO for accepting RM40,000 in bribes from contractors

SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here has secured a seven-day remand order against a Community Development Officer (CDO) suspected of accepting approximately RM40,000 in bribes from contractors linked to the Rumah Mesra Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) construction project.
Sandakan Sessions Court Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal granted the remand order for seven days until 1 May 2025, following an application by the MACC at the Sessions Court on Friday morning.
The male suspect, in his 50s, was arrested at 2.00 pm on Thursday while providing a statement at the MACC Sandakan office.
Sources revealed that the officer allegedly received bribes totalling RM40,000 between 2022 and 2025 in exchange for awarding housing construction projects to specific contractors and individuals.
Sabah MACC Director Datuk Karunanithy Y. Subbiah confirmed the arrest, stating that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which criminalises the solicitation or acceptance of bribes. – James Leong
