DoE, Lions Clubs plant 30 trees on Earth Day

KOTA KINABALU: The Department of Environment (DoE) Sabah and Lions Clubs International planted 30 trees at the Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex to mark the state-level Earth Day 2026.
The programme, themed “Our Power, Our Planet @ Kuasa Kita, Planet Kita”, was aimed to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices among civil servants and the public.
The tree-planting was led by Sabah DoE director Nor Rashidah Mohd Ghazali and involved 40 officers.
Species planted included tembusu, eugenia, bucida, ketapang and bintangor, selected for their suitability to the local environment.
The objectives were to encourage participation in environmental activities, raise awareness of climate change and support broader sustainability goals.
Ten members from Lions Clubs Kota Kinabalu Damai, Keningau Host, Penampang Host and Kota Belud took part in the programme as part of its global environmental initiatives.
The clubs are also involved in judging a photography competition on reducing single-use plastics and supporting a household e-waste collection drive scheduled for April 25 and 26 at the Damai Community Hall.
Earth Day events also included the launch of an anti-single-use plastic campaign at the complex auditorium, focusing on reducing plastic use and promoting reusable alternatives. – Wu Vuide
