Japan contributes a wheelchair accessible van to Cheshire Home

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Government has welcomed the government of Japan’s continued support towards persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Sabah following the contribution of a wheelchair accessible Toyota Hiace van to Sabah Cheshire Home and Services.
Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing (KWKKR) Minister Datuk Julita Majungki said the specially equipped vehicle, contributed under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), would improve mobility and accessibility for beneficiaries at Sabah Cheshire Home and Services in Sandakan.
She said the van would assist PWDs in accessing healthcare services, rehabilitation programmes, education, and community activities more safely and comfortably.
According to Julita, the Sandakan facility previously operated using a van that was over 25 years old and urgently required replacement.
“This contribution is not merely about transportation, but about dignity, independence, and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to participate fully in society,” she said during the official handover ceremony at Sabah Cheshire Home and Services.
Julita noted that accessibility remains a major challenge faced by many PWDs, particularly in accessing essential services and community programmes.
She also expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan and the Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu for their longstanding support towards welfare initiatives in Sabah.
“This is the third vehicle contributed by the Government of Japan to Sabah Cheshire Home and Services, reflecting the strong friendship and humanitarian cooperation between Sabah and Japan,” she said.
The latest contribution, valued at approximately RM251,890, includes a wheelchair loader system and is believed to be the only wheelchair accessible van with such facilities currently serving the community in Sandakan.
Julita also commended Sabah Cheshire Home and Services for its continued dedication in supporting PWDs through residential care, educational support, skills training, and independent living programmes.
She added that the Sabah Government remains committed to supporting welfare-focused Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations through collaborations with agencies such as the Social Welfare Services Department (JPKA).
At the same time, Julita said her ministry is open to exploring future cooperation opportunities with Sabah Cheshire Home and Services to further strengthen welfare services for vulnerable groups, including senior citizens and PWDs.
Also present at the ceremony were the Head of Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu, Hisaki Nakasuji; Second Secretary/Vice-Consul, Sugaya Kyohei; Sabah Cheshire Home and Services president Lawrence Hee Qui Shing; and KWKKR Principal Assistant Secretary, Lee Chun Kiat. – Wu Vuide
