SANDAKAN: Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Danielle Heinecke made a special visit to the Sandakan Heritage Trail during her recent busy schedule in Sandakan.
The High Commissioner was warmly received by Sandakan Heritage Trail founder and chairman Lai King Hang along with his team. She was given an overview of the trail, which spans 10 key heritage sites established since 2003.
At the MPS Square, she viewed the William Pryer Monument (honouring the founder of modern Sandakan), and the adjacent Sandakan Liberation Monument. Sabah Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (Research and Development) Dr Arthur Chung provided insights into Malaysia’s first historical tree trail.
As a gesture of everlasting friendship, the Sandakan Heritage Trail volunteer group presented a special souvenir to the High Commissioner. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in which Sandakan was liberated by Australian forces on October 19, 1945.
To conclude her visit, the High Commissioner’s delegation toured Agnes Keith’s House and St Michael’s and All Angels Church, two renowned Sandakan Heritage Trail landmarks.
Lai King Hang remarked, “It is a privilege and deep honour to share Sandakan’s remarkable history—from its days as a British outpost to the devastation of World War Two. The town’s revival stands as a testament to the perseverance of its people through one of history’s darkest chapters.”
