MPS enforcement personnel assaulted by illegal cigarette peddlers in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Police are investigating an assault on an enforcement personnel member of the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) by a group of men at the Mile 8 market in Bandar Sibuga Jaya last Friday.
OCPD ACP George Abd Rakman said the incident occurred around 2.30pm when the victim and his colleague confronted a man openly selling illegal cigarettes. An argument ensued, after which the enforcement officer was attacked by several other individuals.
“The victim sustained bruises on his body. Police have identified several suspects and made one arrest so far. The case is being investigated for obstructing a public servant, causing hurt, and rioting,” George said.
Meanwhile, MPS President Walter Kenson strongly condemned the violence, stating it would not be tolerated. He expressed concern for the safety of officers carrying out their duties and voiced full support for the police investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
LDP Vice President and Sandakan Municipal Councillor Robert Chong threw his support behind Walter’s zero-tolerance stance, labelling the vendors’ aggressive behaviour as “gangsterism.”
“If they can intimidate enforcement officers today, they may threaten the wider community tomorrow,” Chong warned. He described Mile 8 as a busy commercial hub and stressed that public safety must be a priority.
Chong urged authorities to launch a district-wide integrated operation against illegal vending. He warned that unchecked illegal activities could lead to bigger social problems and allow certain groups to “colonise” public spaces. – James Leong
