SANDAKAN: The marine police here uncovered an alleged smuggling ring diverting subsidized cooking oil for the foreign market during an integrated inter-agency operation on Jan 9.
Acting on intelligence, the team from “Op Taring Landai Khas Kontraban” raided a warehouse at Batu ½ at about 12.35 pm. Authorities discovered an illegal repackaging operation in progress, where subsidised cooking oil was being transferred for export without a valid permit.
The operation involved a box lorry and two tanker lorries at the scene. A Pakistani man present during the raid was detained for failing to produce authorisation documents from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living.
The seizure included 926 boxes of cooking oil, two tanker lorries, and one lorry. The total estimated value of the confiscated items is RM 1,576,402.
The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
