KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is studying the feasibility of building a tourism jetty in Tawau to provide an alternative route for tourists travelling to the islands in Semporna.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the ministry was reviewing the proposed development, including the suitability of the location and its long-term viability.
Jafry was responding to Warisan-Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong Yung Bin during the question-and-answer session at the State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.
He said the ministry had also submitted an application to the Federal Government to upgrade the Semporna Tourism Jetty, which requires improvements to cater for the growing number of tourists visiting the surrounding islands.
Jafry said the ministry hoped the application would receive consideration and approval from the Federal Government.
He added that the ministry would continue working with local authorities and the Ports and Harbours Department on matters related to tourism jetties in Tawau, Semporna and the West Coast areas. – Paul Mu
