SANDAKAN: The Royal Malaysian Navy’s (RMN) Region 2 Headquarters (MAWILLA 2), in partnership with the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sandakan, rolled out a comprehensive fire safety exercise designed to reinforce emergency readiness and bolster the response capabilities of personnel operating in maritime environments.
The initiative featured fire safety briefings, live firefighting demonstrations, and hands-on practical drills—all conducted onboard a RMN vessel at the KD Sri Sandakan base.
Marking a historic first, Sandakan firemen were directly integrated into a simulated firefighting and rescue mission aboard a naval warship. This provided an invaluable opportunity to test inter-agency coordination, operational efficiency, and collaborative crisis response under conditions closely mirroring a real-life emergency.
KD Todak was selected as the training platform, offering a genuinely challenging shipboard environment for executing fire scenarios and search-and-rescue operations. The exercise served as a crucial reminder that preparedness transcends mere planning—it must be rigorously tested, continuously drilled, and consistently refined to guarantee swift, precise, and effective action during actual emergencies.
Beyond sharpening tactical skills, the joint exercise fostered significant cross-agency knowledge exchange. JBPM personnel gained critical insight into the unique spatial constraints and compartmentalized layouts of naval vessels, while RMN crew members enhanced their familiarity with professional firefighting techniques and rescue protocols.
This collaborative synergy is expected to inform future standard operating procedures, paving the way for more integrated and seamless joint responses to maritime emergencies across Sandakan’s waters.
