Sabah to beef up security in Kudat waters

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Government wants maritime security around Banggi and Balambangan islands in Kudat strengthened following developments in military activities nearby.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said all parties must remain vigilant to safeguard national security and sovereignty.
He said the State Government welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s emphasis on procuring artificial intelligence (AI)-based radar systems and long-range cameras for Kudat in 2028.
“I have also personally discussed with the Prime Minister the need to increase the number of security personnel in Kudat waters, and he responded well.
“Security is a fundamental pillar of national stability, sustained economic development and the well-being of the people.
“This is in line with the security and defence priorities outlined in Budget 2027,” he said when chairing the State Security Committee meeting at Menara Kinabalu yesterday.
He also called on relevant agencies to step up monitoring of transboundary haze affecting several areas in Sabah near the Indonesian border.
He said the haze could affect public health, economic activities and security operations if not properly monitored and addressed.
“I urge the relevant agencies to continue sharing information on air quality and weather warnings, monitor the haze situation and assess its impact on the daily lives and well-being of the people,” he said.
Hajiji also reminded security agencies to remain vigilant amid changing global and regional sociopolitical developments and their potential impact on public order in Sabah.
He cited public dissatisfaction and political tensions in France, as well as protests in Indonesia over the handling of haze-related issues, which had fuelled public discontent.
He said these developments showed how issues concerning public welfare and government leadership could influence public sentiment and social stability.
He called on relevant agencies to continue monitoring developments, including information and public sentiment on social media, to identify issues that could undermine public order and social harmony in Sabah.
