TAWAU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) continues to play a vital role in safeguarding eastern Sabah as it celebrates 12 years of operations, reinforcing its significance in combating cross-border crimes and maintaining regional stability.
Established in 2013 following the armed intrusion in Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu, ESSCOM has been pivotal in coordinating security efforts among the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone).
Mohd Zaki Harry Susanto, advisor for the Sabah Crime Prevention Organisation (PPDJS), highlighted ESSCOM’s achievements, including a sharp decline in kidnapping-for-ransom cases, smuggling activities, and illegal immigration.
“Over the past 12 years, ESSCOM has foiled 59 attempted kidnappings, detained more than 16,000 illegal immigrants (PATI), and repelled or seized over 500 foreign fishing vessels encroaching into Malaysian waters,” he said in a statement marking ESSCOM’s anniversary.
Zaki credited these successes to the deployment of advanced technology, such as radar systems and surveillance drones, as well as enhanced trilateral cooperation with the Philippines and Indonesia through joint patrols.
“ESSCOM has restored public and investor confidence in ESSZone’s security, which was once considered a high-risk area,” he added.
However, Zaki stressed the need for ESSCOM to further bolster its capabilities through additional assets, rigorous tactical training, and stronger community engagement to act as the “eyes and ears” of security forces.
“Emerging threats such as cybercrime, arms smuggling, and human trafficking require constant vigilance. ESSCOM must remain prepared to address evolving challenges,” he said.
Despite the current peace in eastern Sabah, Zaki cautioned against complacency, drawing parallels to unforeseen disasters like the recent earthquake in Myanmar.
“Calm waters can hide dangers. ESSCOM’s presence remains crucial to ensuring long-term safety,” he said, acknowledging the community’s unwavering support for the security forces.
ESSCOM reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Sabah’s land and maritime borders, ensuring the region remains secure and prosperous for years to come.
