TAWAU: Seven individuals were detained by police in connection with a brawl at a restaurant in Jalan Haji Karim here on Sunday.
The incident allegedly involved a clash between two groups dining at the restaurant took place at 5:45 pm, deputy OCPD Superintendent Champin Piuh on Tuesday.
He revealed that police received a report from the restaurant owner after the incident resulted in damage to several items in his premises.
“Following the report, a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division launched an operation to track down the suspects involved,” Champin said.
The seven individuals involved, aged between 20 and 49, were picked up from separate locations to facilitate further probe into the case, he added.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between them while they were also intoxicated.
“A background check showed that three of them had prior criminal and drug-related records,” he added.
Champin said the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 427 of the same code for mischief causing loss or damage. – James Leong
