LAHAD DATU: The body of a newborn baby boy was discovered wrapped in cloth inside a box at an unnumbered roadside stall in Batu 13, Jalan Jeroco on April 14.
A member of the public found the infant’s body around 2.00 pm and immediately alerted the authorities.
OCPD ACP Dzulbaharin Ismail confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to identify the suspect responsible for abandoning the baby.
The body has been sent to the Forensics Unit of Lahad Datu Hospital for post-mortem, he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing birth and disposing of a body. If convicted, the offender faces a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, Dzulbaharin said.
Dzulbaharin urged anyone with information to contact investigating officer Inspector Mohd Damsa Dahlan at 089-881255 or the nearest police station to facilitate in the investigation. – James Leong
