Joachim fully supports Kundasang tourism promotion

KUNDASANG: Deputy Chief Minister II and Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, officiated the Highland Safari 2025 event at the Open Stage in Kundasang on Tuesday night.
The second edition of the event saw the participation of 160 four-wheel-drive vehicles and 60 off-road motorcycles. The three-day programme, which began on 19 April, took participants through a challenging route from Kundasang Town to Bambangan, Lipasu, Mamut, and ended in Sinar, Kundasang.
Joachim, who is also the Kundasang Assemblyman, stated that such programmes strengthen the local tourism sector, particularly in Kundasang and Ranau.
“This event is not just a competition platform but also promotes Kundasang’s tourism, which is already renowned for various attractions such as the Cabbage Festival and running events,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the organizing committee, led by Samsul Sinun, for their efforts in making the programme a success with the support of various stakeholders, including sponsors, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
He noted that Kundasang’s cool weather, which can drop to 9 degrees Celsius with strong winds and rain, makes it a unique and attractive destination for domestic and international tourists.
Joachim also congratulated all competition winners and extended his gratitude to Ranau District Officer Tinus Manggam, who co-chaired the event at the district level.
Additionally, he acknowledged the contributions of agencies involved, including the Health Clinic, medical teams, Sabah Parks, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Ranau Division, the Malaysian Volunteer Department (RELA), and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) for their cooperation and commitment in ensuring the programme’s success.
“If the people continue to mandate the current government, I will fully support the Highland Safari event in the coming years,” he said.
Meanwhile, Organizing Chairman Samsul Sinun thanked Joachim for his support and recognition of all parties involved, including programme advisor Simon Leong Ken Hiung and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their strong collaboration.
The event was also attended by Tongod District Officer Yuesri Ismail Yusof, a native of Kundasang, as well as presidents of four-wheel-drive associations from across Sabah. – James Leong
