POIC Lahad Datu Port offers support for east coast traders

LAHAD DATU: The POIC Lahad Datu Port has positioned itself as a viable alternative for traders and shippers on Sabah’s east coast facing congestion at Tawau Port.
Operated by state-owned POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, the POIC Lahad Datu Port offers dedicated terminals for container cargo, liquid bulk (such as crude palm oil), and dry bulk (including fertilizers).
Datuk Fredian Gan, Group Chief Executive Officer of POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, emphasized the port’s readiness to address trade gaps.
“We are seeking to clarify misunderstandings about POIC’s capacity and commitment to supporting commerce, including with stakeholders like the Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA),” he said.
The Tawau Port, managed by Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd, has recently experienced container terminal congestion due to equipment failures. “The breakdown and resulting delays are unfortunate. In the interim, we offer POIC Lahad Datu as an alternative,” Gan added.
Established in 2013, POIC Lahad Datu began with dry and liquid bulk terminals, later expanding to a container terminal in 2019. On 29 June 2022, it was declared a public port, enabling regional and international shipping. Investors praise its “port-within-a-park” concept for streamlining logistics.
The port recently handled super heavy-duty containerized batteries for Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd’s 100MW Battery Energy Storage System in Lahad Datu, slated for operation this June.
“We have an experienced crew and excellent facilities,” said Gan, underscoring the port’s reliability. – James Leong
