Sung Siew School celebrates 118th anniversary, launches school relocation fundraising run

SANDAKAN: A spirited atmosphere of unity filled the grounds of Sung Siew Secondary School here Saturday morning as the school hosted its 118th Anniversary and Fundraising Onward Sung Siew Run (OSSR), marking the launch of efforts to relocate the institution to a new site at Batu 4, Jalan Cecily Utara.
Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, who officiated the closing ceremony, commended the organisers for the meaningful event, describing the day as historic not only for the school but for the entire Sandakan community.
“118 years is no short period. It reflects a long journey filled with challenges and dedication. Sung Siew Secondary School has produced thousands of successful alumni across various fields—be it education, entrepreneurship, public service, or even on the international stage,” said Joachim, himself a former student of the school.
He emphasised that the charity run symbolised the community’s shared commitment to empowering the future of education in Sandakan by providing more modern and conducive school facilities.
“This relocation project is a bold and visionary step. I am confident that with better facilities and spacious learning environments, this school will continue to be an outstanding institution and a source of pride for the community,” added Joachim, who is also Sabah’s Minister of Local Government and Housing.
The Onward Sung Siew Run successfully brought together students, parents, teachers, alumni, and local residents who participated in various race categories, including 1km, 3km, and a leisure walk, in support of the fundraising initiative.
“Our contributions today are not merely donations but symbols of care, love, and a strong sense of social responsibility. Every step taken in this run brings us closer to a grand dream—a new school for a new generation,” Joachim remarked.
He also called for such events to be held annually, not only as fundraising platforms but also as opportunities to foster community bonding, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen ties between the school and society.
Also present to enliven the event were school administrators, the Board of Governors, the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), sponsors, and volunteers who played crucial roles in ensuring the success of the charity programme.
Among the distinguished guests were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee; Tanjung Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung; District Education Officer Datu Roslih Datu Siabok; Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kenson; Chairman of the Sung Siew Secondary School Board of Governors Ir. Vun Soon Chong; Alumni Association President Johnny Lim; and School Principal Kwok Chee Yen. -James Leong
