Sabah MACC remands five over RM200,000 bribery since 2022

SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) Sabah has remanded five individuals, including an engineer, an assistant engineer, and current and former staff of a local authority (PBT) in the state, on suspicion of accepting around RM200,000 in bribes from contractors.
A seven-day remand order, valid until 23 July 2025, was issued by Magistrate Yong Ching Hong following an application by SPRM at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday morning.
The five suspects—three men and two women aged between 30 and 50—were detained at the Sabah SPRM office on Tuesday at around 7 p.m. while giving their statements.
According to sources, the suspects allegedly received bribes through bank transfers into their personal accounts since 2022 from contractors involved in projects under the PBT where they were employed.
“It is believed that the bribes were given in exchange for assistance in securing quotations and tenders for projects under the PBT from 2022 to 2025,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Sabah SPRM Director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests when contacted and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. – James Leong
